The Setting Son - Spring of Hate (2009)(CD)
The Setting Son’s second album, Spring of Hate, released April 20, 2009, by Bad Afro Records, evolves from their 2007 debut with a matured, cohesive sound. Frontman Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen, backed by a steady band, deepens their psychedelic pop and garage rock roots, blending 60s influences with modern neo-psych. Recorded at Copenhagen’s Black Tornado studio, produced by Lorenzo Woodrose, and mixed by Johan Lei Gellett, the 12-track, 36-minute album reflects angst and escapism inspired by 2007 Copenhagen riots over a demolished youth house. Standout tracks like the catchy “Soulmate,” melancholic “Girl of Sorrow,” and raw “I Lost Control” showcase emotional depth and variety. Kristiansen’s nasal vocals and lyrics of love, loss, and rebellion shine through songs like “Obsession” and “Fool My Heart,” with tortured solos and infectious hooks. Released on LP, CD, and digital, Spring of Hate refines the band’s chaotic, addictive energy while moving beyond the debut’s lo-fi, solo-project vibe.
